The Rotary Club of Thornbury  Members
Rotary in Thornbury
The first Rotary Club was formed in Chicago in 1906 to serve and support its community. Over 30,000 clubs now exist throughout the world. with the same aims and objectives.
Our club was formed in 1971 by Thornbury business and professional men. It not only supports our district, but is part of the worldwide Rotary movement.
The Rotary Wheel symbol is thought to be one of the world's most recognised symbols - up there with McDonald's arches and the Nike swoosh. For decades, it has been seen frequently around our town, especially during the Swimarathon, our major community event, and when shaking collection buckets around Christmas time.
Its recognition and reputation has enabled Rotary to deliver many major charitable, educational and training projects in co-operation with world NGOs, and has attracted major influential donors - Bill Gates among others. No wonder that a President of Rotary International coined the phrase "The Magic of Rotary"
The Rotary Foundation, its world-wide charity, is the funding source for major projects. All Rotary Clubs, including this one, make annual donations from fund-raising activities and personal donations
Since that time, the Club has organised many local events, assisted many local charities and good causes, and participated in many international projects
